Treating people like they treat you, is my topic on this week’s “Bleeding Heart Chronicles”. Good morning, love. Well, this subject was brought up months ago as I was talking to a lady who reads the Chronicles. Have you ever had someone treat you a certain way that displeased you? But they saw nothing wrong with what they did. Then you turn around and do the same thing back, and now they are really angry with you?

Some may think that the ideal thing to do is to be nicer. That somehow creating a better atmosphere will show them you deserve to be treated better. That kindness would overcome unkindness. Maybe you are in church and you believe that you should turn the other cheek. Maybe you believe the meek shall inherit the earth. In behavioral psychology, this is called the “Law of Effect” and states that behavior varies as a function of its consequences. You are rewarding bad behavior and teaching others it’s ok to mistreat you. Therefore, they will never stop. Why should they?

If you continue to turn the other cheek, you’ll run out of cheeks to present and end up with a bruised face. And the only way the meek inherit the Earth is when the aggressive pound their faces into the earth. Your reaction that follows after you have been treated poorly will weaken or strengthen the likelihood that it will occur again. There’s nothing wrong with you being kind to people but you must stand up for yourself and not allow yourself to be treated with disrespect.

I‘m not saying to treat people as they have treated you. That solves nothing. But you should teach people how to treat you. You do not begin with them, you begin with yourself! People learn how to treat you based on what you accept from them. Ask yourself these questions. How do I treat myself? What do I value? What do I want? What do I think I deserve? Set boundaries or rules in your relationship. Like, no name calling or yelling during a conversation, and taking a break when tempers flare. Communicate your needs clearly. Pouting, desperation, or even abuse, will NOT show anyone how you want to be treated. The message will be lost. Show appreciation when the other person makes the effort to change their behavior, towards you. And be realistic, this could take months to accomplish. You decide if the person is worth your time to teach.

We live in a self absorbed world. It’s hard to navigate at times. There’s a saying I heard. “How people treat you is their karma; how you react is yours.” Your relationship with yourself is the most important one you will ever have in your life. What you have and feel inside can radiate out and affect all those around you. We may not be able to change anyone else, but we can create a different reaction in others if we change ourselves. I stand with you. I bleed with you. We will pursue a brighter day and happiness in our life. We will survive how others treat us. Because Together we are unstoppable, my love! Blessings and positive energy to you all, Always and forever!
