The Shadow Self of darkness, leads to happiness, is my topic on this week’s “Bleeding Heart Chronicles”. Good morning, love. What is Shadow Self? And why would I say darkness leads to happiness? To quote a fictional villain, “You don’t know the power of the dark side” ~ Darth Vader. I’m talking about that darkness we all possess. The Shadow Self. You know, that dark side of you that most people don’t want to admit to having.
In the past I have written a lot about darkness, and how without it, we would never see the light. But the darkness I speak of today is often referred to by psychologist as the ‘Shadow Self’. The ‘Shadow Self’ is the least desirable aspects of one’s personality, which the conscious ego does not identify in itself. It is a archetype that forms part of the unconscious mind and is composed of repressed ideas, instincts, impulses, weaknesses, desires, perversions, and embarrassing fears. The shadow can be largely negative but also have hidden positive aspects. Because most people are accustomed to feeling shame or guilt for having a dark side, they never become self-aware and reach their full potential of being happy. As egotistical people we like to think that we are inherently good human beings and we don’t dwell in any negativity. But, within us all is both what we call Good and Evil. We all are susceptible to negative emotions, consciously or unconsciously, that is why chemistry recognizes so many negative hormones within a human body.
As I write this, I remember when I was first discovered my dark entity. I became aware of it during a spiritual awakening. Now I don’t want to get buried down into discussing awakenings, but I have to say this. I’ve heard some people refer to having an awakening and describing it as a light coming on and feeling euphoric. That’s Not an awakening. A spiritual Awakening can be painful emotionally, because we shed away many of the constructs, beliefs, patterns – inside and out – that we have accumulated around us over the course of years. This is exactly what happened with me. It was in my darkest moments. When I was beaten and shattered into a million pieces. It was in that second that I should have been dead. I had wanted to be dead. It was like I felt a strong dark presence around me. I felt that if I could just have that dark power that was around me, everything would be ok. So I confronted it. I surrendered to it. I felt a type of anger energy course through me. It was a strong rejuvenating anger. That overwhelming anger that says I’m Not done. That boost of pure raw energy that says bring on the world, I’m ready!
My life changed. And over the next few months I evolved into a completely different person, from inside out. I lost my fear. I lost my guilt. I stopped hating myself. And I really started to live. I noticed little things. I could feel the energy alive within me. To let go and allow this energy to express itself in life, was a huge weight lifting off of me. It became a strong source of creative energy. The power was intoxicating. I could notice and feel the energy in others. I felt more intune with myself and my surroundings.
Religions and society’s ideas of acceptable and non-acceptable behavior have contributed to the repression of the Shadow Self. Causing us to live fractionated lives, accepting some parts of our nature but rejecting and ignoring other parts. We are taught about the “light” energies such as peace, compassion, harmony, joy and love. While ignoring or condemning the darker elements such as control, fear, shame, anger, vengeance, jealousy, and lust. How can you completely accept who you are if there are sides of yourself that you are too afraid to explore?
The denial of the Shadow Self creates disharmony and can lead to physical, emotional, psychological, and interpersonal consequences that last for a very long time. This can cause our unconscious minds to fragment or structure into different “selves,” never becoming adequately integrated into our conscious minds. A fragmented person is forced to handle adversity from the corners of their personality parts, and end up failing in life because they have no whole center. The more our darkness is denied, the more it grows within us, waiting to explode at any unexpected moment.
Turning toward your Shadow Self will help you to embrace the disconnected parts of yourself, creating a more psychological and spiritual balance. By integrating your darkness, you can pursue the light of self-love in a balanced way. By accepting your own humanness you can begin to cultivate self-compassion and self-acceptance. This action can give you healing, calmness, sanity, greater compassion for others, understanding, and wholeness. By integrating your darkness, you take control of it, instead of it controlling you. By embracing your darkness you get all the benefits of being a truly whole person able to pursue life as you see fit.
We live in a judgemental world. Society has a strict and hypocritical tolerance for what is acceptable. Why label things when anything can be good or evil depending on how we view it or use it? It is our darkness that gives us depth and dimension. It is the darkness that gives us strength in our times of need. The Shadow Self is that powerful unadorned part of yourself, that teaches us the places we are energetically blocked in our lives. As always, I stand with you. I bleed with you. Together we can embrace our duality, and allow darkness and light, to peacefully coexist and make us whole. We will pursue a brighter day and happiness in our life. Because Together we are unstoppable, my love! Blessings and positive energy to you all, Always and forever!
