Powering up Happiness (Part 2), is my topic on this week’s “Bleeding Heart Chronicles”. Good morning, love. I have studied human emotions and behavior for years. Great strides has been made in the research of positive psychology, figuring out what makes us happy. [gap size=”8px”] If any of you reading this has ever been depressed or still suffering from it. You may wonder why is it so hard for you to be happy. Well, Fear not. You are NOT alone. Statistics show that more of us are suffering from clinical depression and anxiety! What’s worse is it also shows more teens are becoming depressed at younger ages. Studies show our genes are responsible for about 40% of our happiness. We are born with a certain temperament that makes us more likely to see the light or complete darkness. Our biological set-point is what researchers are calling this. [gap size=”8px”] So we are not entirely in control of our happiness because of our moods being so complex. Despite these limitations, there are things you can do that have been proven to increase your enjoyment of life. You have to be willing to change your mental focus. Willing to practice new habits and ways of behaving. Trying new things and seeing old things in a new way. There are things that should be done now, that will ensure long term happiness. [gap size=”8px”] .1 This is all you have. You’re not promised a tomorrow. Your time on earth is limited. This perspective will force you to seek happiness now. So remind yourself of this often. Get rid of negative things and people in your life. This is what often causes you to suffer. Make a mental note of what does and does not bring you happiness. Focus on any opportunities that present themselves. The things that you identify as giving you happiness, build more of theses things into your daily life. Learn to be grateful for and savor the little moments of happiness you do experience. [gap size=”8px”] .2 Your happiness depends on you and what you do. Some people delude themselves into believing that life, is responsible for their happiness. They feel mistreated that they have been forced to live in a world filled with such hardships for them. Look around. Someone’s life is always worse than yours. Do you really want to leave your happiness to the will, whim, or ability of Life, friends or family? Take charge of filling your own life with happiness. You’re not special or exempt from life throwing curve balls on your journey. Refuse to become a victim. Life has plenty of those these days. Except there are things you simply can not change. And become responsible for the things you can change. [gap size=”8px”] .3 Decide to be happy. Sounds way too simple, I know. But life is about choices and then taking action to make the choice a reality. Try seeing each day as an opportunity to be happy. Set priorities. This one is hard for me. But by making a schedule, you can make time for the things that are most important to you and not get bogged down in trivial matters that simply waste your precious time. [gap size=”8px”] .4 Your attitude and frame of mind will help form your happiness. You can have everything in life going your way. You can be in the best health, be financially set, physically attractive, and a negative frame of mind will ruin any chance of happiness. You control your emotional state with your attitude. Learn to train your mind to focus on the attitude that promotes happiness. When you find yourself looking at a situation in a completely negative way, stop yourself. Turn that situation completely around in your head and see it from a positive angle. I will tell you this as a matter of fact. When you begin to project a positive frame of mind, you will attract positive things to you. It may not cause a miracle to happen. But it will bring brighter things within your reach. [gap size=”8px”] .5 Your happiness requires you to work at it. Yes, I wish it would just drop into my lap also. But things that are worth having, are worth working for. I live with chronic pain everyday of my life. It’s a struggle. But you learn there are degrees of pain. On my better days I work really hard to make them great. I take full advantage of days I don’t feel as bad. So, happiness should be no different. There are days you may fail. That’s ok. Tomorrow can be better. Strive each day to have the right frame of mind and practice a positive outlook on each situation. Working on happiness is like keeping your body clean. You have to make the effort to take a bath/shower every day to stay clean. Happiness requires the same effort each and every day. Neglect doing it, and your life could stink. [gap size=”8px”] I briefly want to tell you a very short story. I won’t go into details. There was this lady who was diagnosed with very severe depression and anxiety. Her husband thought she had become a hopeless case. But a doctor took her as a patient. He started very simple. Just 30 minutes a day of practicing positive beliefs. Of course she resisted at the start. But 30 minutes isn’t really that long to hold back all those negative and self defeating feelings. So after a time, she gave in and began the small sessions. A few months later her husband reported that on a certain day he noticed his wife looked like she wanted to say something but just couldn’t. She didn’t look sad but she looked embarrassed. He pleaded with her to say what was on her mind. That is when she finally said, I think I’m happy today. And that began her upward ascension. So, a little each day of positive thoughts can pay off in the long run when your mind finally changes the way it frames the way you see things. [gap size=”8px”] We live in a world of negativity. So happiness is not all around you, but rather what is happening inside you. It comes from within. It can be difficult striving to be happy everyday. But if it were easy, everyone would be happy all the time! Happiness is a state of mind. Expose yourself to pleasant and uplifting things, and guess what happens? That happy, pleasant and uplifting thing will rub off on you. As always. I stand with you. I bleed with you. We will pursue a brighter day and happiness in our life. We will overcome roadblocks that impede our happiness. Because Together we are unstoppable, my love! WE will be Happy! Always and forever!
