Dealing with Depression part 1, is my topic on this week’s “Bleeding Heart Chronicles”. Good morning, love. Depression is a real thing. If you think not. Consider the numbers. 300million suffer each year from depression. 260 million people suffer from anxiety disorders. Many live with both conditions. It cost the global economy $1 trillion in lost productivity every year. And the number 1 leading cause of ill health and disability??……….. Depression!!!

Depression is not what most people think. Most people picture a person sitting alone in the dark looking at four walls, or crying. Nope!! Wrong!! Thanks for playing but no cookie for you!! Society has taught us that if you are anything less then perfect, you will be shunned and ostracized. That person who is having fun and out partying with you. Drinking and laughing and appearing to have a good time. If you look deep enough, you may notice very subtle signs. This person is depressed and contemplating suicide. Think I’m wrong? How many times have you heard someone say “omg! They killed themselves? But I just spoke to him/her yesterday, they seemed so happy!”

Depression is a common condition. More then society would like to admit. And it affects women twice as much as men. Prolonged social stress and major disruption of social ties are known risk factors for depression. Loss of loved ones and job, increases the risk. People who become depressed a lot or easily, usually have suffered early childhood separation from parents, parental neglect or abuse. This makes them vulnerable to major depression later in life because this sets their nervous system to over-respond to stress.

I can not stress enough how much depression is a problem. It is the reason I decided to talk about it in more than one part. It deserves a hard look. Depression is more than a disorder in just your head. Researchers have established, for example, that immune function is often compromised in depressive states, and impaired immune function may in part underlie the link of depression to such other disorders as heart disease.

The following signs and symptoms are signifiers of major depressive disorder and at least five must be present during the extended period of low mood or loss of pleasure in once-enjoyable pursuits.
.1) Persistent sad, anxious, or empty mood most of the day, most days
.2) Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt
Loss of interest or pleasure in activities that were once enjoyed, including sex
.3) Persistent loss of energy or fatigue
.4) Difficulty thinking, concentrating, remembering, or making decisions
.5) Insomnia, early morning awakening, or oversleeping (hypersomnia)
.6) Significant change in appetite resulting in unintended weight loss or weight gain
.7) Observable psychomotor agitation or restlessness, or psychomotor slowing
.8) Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism; recurrent thoughts of death or suicide, suicide attempts

Words matter. You never know the power your words carry. You can lift someone up. Or you can add that final straw that sends them on their way to the afterlife. Be careful with words you use with people. Especially those that may seem a little down. It can always be worse then what appears on the surface. Getting support plays an essential role in overcoming depression. Managing this alone can make it difficult to maintain a healthy perspective and effort to defeat depression. It’s a two edged sword. You need to reach out, yet depression often makes it difficult to do so. The normal response is to withdraw from family and friends. Often we feel too exhausted to talk, ashamed of the situation and neglectful of relationships. But connecting with other people and social events can make a world of difference in your mood. It’s a step in the right direction.

There is much more I want to cover in depression. In my next article, we will examine causes of depression and more things that we can do to overcome depression.

[gap size=”8px”]

When depression and anxiety threaten your world, we must reach out for help. There are some battles that can not be won alone. You may be sad, but you are not hopeless. You may be afraid but you are Not powerless. Tomorrow always offers a brand new day. A brand new day to start again. We must look towards the light of a new day. Push and reach out beyond the guilt, sadness, fear, and shame of the energy draining depression. I stand with you. I feel your mood. I feel pain with you. I bleed with you. And Together, we will rise above depression. We will pursue a brighter day and balance in our life. Because Together we are unstoppable, my love! WE will master Depression! Always and forever!
